Los Carmelitas son una orden religiosa nacida en el siglo XII en el Monte Carmelo (Tierra Santa), que desarrollaron una fuerte veneración a la Virgen María, bajo el título de "Nuestra Señora del Monte Carmelo," como modelo de oración, pureza y obediencia. La Virgen María se apareció a San Simón Stock, Prior General de los Carmelitas, el 16 de julio de 1251, en Aylesford, Inglaterra. En esta aparición, la Virgen entregó el escapulario, diciendo: “Recibe, hijo amado, este escapulario. Será para ti y para todos los carmelitas un privilegio: quien muera con él no padecerá el fuego eterno.” Desde entonces el escapulario es un símbolo de protección y de promesa para quien lo porta con fe.
